The Hidden Beauty of Fall

To be honest, I have always dreaded fall because it means letting go of summer. No more swimming, lake days, or spending long afternoons outside. The days grow shorter, the trees become bare, and everything begins to look a little lifeless. Fall and winter in the Ozarks can be especially harsh, with ice often arriving before the snow.

But our flowers have reminded us that each season brings its own energy, purpose, beauty, colors, and emotions. There is beauty to be found in every season, even the ones we are tempted to rush through.

One thing I do love about fall in the Ozarks is the changing of colors during the Autumn season. Have you ever stopped to wonder what is actually happening behind those brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows? These colors are more than just a beautiful display – they are actually telling a story. They are the result of fascinating changes taking place within the leaves as trees prepare for winter. These changes are a process called senescence.

Throughout spring and summer, leaves are filled with chlorophyll, the green pigment that helps trees capture sunlight for photosynthesis. As the days grow shorter, the tree begins reclaiming valuable nutrients from its leaves, and the chlorophyll gradually breaks down.

That's when something beautiful happens.

The golden yellows and warm oranges come from carotenoids—pigments that have been inside the leaves all along, quietly protecting them throughout the growing season. They were always there; we just couldn't see them beneath the green. But now that we can, those colors are revealing what is now going on. Those carotenoids are pulling all of the nutrients that are left in the leaves and taking it to the trunk and roots of the tree to store for the winter and use in the spring.

Then come the deep reds and purples. These colors come from anthocyanins, pigments that many trees produce during autumn. They help protect the leaves as the tree finishes preparing for winter, giving us some of the most breathtaking colors of the season.

What looks like a simple change of color is actually a beautiful reminder that even nature prepares, lets go, and rests before new growth begins.

A Season of Wonder

Perhaps that is one of the beautiful reminders autumn offers us: rest has a purpose, and letting go is not always a loss. Sometimes, it is part of preparing for what comes next.

At Ramble, we are learning to appreciate each season for what it brings, rather than wishing it away for the one that comes next. There is beauty in the fullness of summer, but there is beauty in the quietness of autumn, too.

The more we learn about the world around us, the more we begin to see at just how much there is to marvel. Even the changing colors of a leaf reveal the intricate wisdom woven into God's creation. What we see as a simple change of color is part of a remarkable process happening within each leaf, reminding us that there is often more taking place than meets the eye.

Psalm 104:24 says, “O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all: the earth is full of your riches.”

What a beautiful reminder that the changing seasons are not simply something to observe, but another opportunity to stand in awe of the One who created them. The same God who designed the intricate processes within a leaf has filled the world with beauty, purpose, and wonder.

Sometimes, all it takes is pausing long enough to notice the beauty around us to be reminded of the One behind it all.

XOXO,

Victoria
